This will be the second-last British Grand Prix to be held at this venue, as it was announced this morning that the race will move to Donington Park from 2010 onwards. It was the first race in the inaugural round of the world championship back in 1950.
Nevertheless, racing at the former airfield is usually good up and down the order. The mixture of long straights and fast and slow corners have seen a number of interesting races, such as the 2003 race where a protestor invaded the track, and the 1999 race which saw Mika Hakkinen lose a wheel and Michael Schumacher break his leg. The latter was won by David Coulthard, who announced his retirement yesterday, in a duel with Eddie Irvine.
The cars will be tuned with medium downforce to suit the fast nature of the track, which is susceptible to strong winds. Testing is frequently conducted here, and a session was held last week. Ferrari are expected to do well once again also McLaren claim to have improved high-speed handling this year.
The championship is still wide open with Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen, Robert Kubica and Lewis Hamilton separated by 10 points. Find out on Sunday who will make the most inroads!
